Borussia Mönchengladbach

August 8, 2006

While spending the winter in the relegation zone, Mönchengladbach decided to invest another 3.25 million euros in an already expensive squad.

The new arrivals are Ivorian defender Steve Gohouri and midfielders Alexander Baumjohann and Mikkel Thygesen from Schalke and Danish side Midtjylland respectively.

Serious doubts remain, though, about whether they will have enough of an impact to resuscitate a squad that started decently but then went moribund in 2006. Gladbach decided to stick with coach Jupp Heynckes but expect immediate results. If the team fails to rebound straight away, Heynckes will be history.

He can be optimistic about the return of German national Marcell Jansen and Belgian talent Wesley Sonck from injury. But with striker Oliver Neuville starting 2007 on the disabled list, Gladbach are still thin up front and look to headed toward a long, hard struggle to stay up.
