Best blog on climate change: ‘Coluna Zero’ from Brazil

Winners of “The BOBs” at this year’s Deutsche Welle Global Media Forum from June 21-23 in Bonn

“Coluna Zero” from Brazil was voted best blog covering climate change, as chosen by the jury of The BOBs, Deutsche Welle’s international blog awards. This was the first time that an award was chosen for the category “Special Topic Award Climate Change”. Author Bruno Rezende will receive his award during this year’s Deutsche Welle Global Media Forum in Bonn.

This year’s conference, entitled “The Heat is On – Climate Change and the Media”, will take place from June 21-23 in Bonn. This is the sixth year that DW has presented the awards for best blogs. The BOBs award-winners in six categories and 11 languages will be honored at a ceremony in Bonn.

In his blog “Coluna Zero”, author Bruno Rezende writes in Portuguese about ecotourism and environmental consciousness in Brazil. For the 28-year-old from Rio de Janeiro, it’s all about “minimizing excessive consumption”. For his research, he travels throughout Brazil and presents the results in what the jury said is an “easygoing, entertaining way”.

Rezende thinks that helping out with climate protection is important – but more important is “the freedom that each individual has to form opinions, collecting different ideas and coming to a conclusion.” He believes that the most important thing about the climate change debate is “the participation of people from different countries and other regions.” Rezende says there is “no other means of communication that is as interactive as a blog”.

Climate change in social media

Climate change in social media is just one of many aspects that the Deutsche Welle Global Media Forum will highlight this year. The international conference will once again offer more than 50 events including podium discussions and workshops, interactive presentations and exhibitions, networking and interesting side events. It takes place at the World Conference Center Bonn, close to Deutsche Welle’s headquarters.

Deutsche Welle is cooperating with many different organizations for this interdisciplinary conference, including the UNESCO, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the International Human Dimensions Program on Global Environmental Change (UN IHDP/ESSP), EU Commission and the World Bank, the Wuppertal Institute, World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF), NABU and the Climate Alliance, the Institute for World Business Kiel, German Development Institute (DIE), the Center for Development Research (ZEF) and many others.
Co-host of the Deutsche Welle Global Media Forum is the Foundation for International Dialogue of the Sparkasse in Bonn. The convention is also supported by Germany’s Federal Foreign Office, the Family, Women and Integration Ministry of the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, European Funds for Regional Development, the city of Bonn, DHL, the KSB Group and Faber-Castell.
