Surprise Uganda marathon win

Uganda's Stephen Kiprotich powered past his Kenyan rivals in the men's marathon at London 2012 to secure the country's second-ever gold medal. The US beat Spain in the men's basketball to win their 14th basketball gold.

On the penultimate day of the London Olympics, Germany’s men’s hockey team has won Olympic gold , beating the Netherlands 2-1. Meanwhile, Germany nabbed a silver medal in the women's mountain biking.

Beach gold for Germany

For the first time since the sport's debut at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, a European country has won beach volleyball gold. Germany's Julius Brink and Jonas Reckermann defeated Brazil to win.

Bucked off podium

Germany missed the podium in the individual jumping event of the equestrian competition at the London Olympics. The disappointment in that event was off-set to some extent by medals from Germany in earlier competitions.

Robert Harting won gold in the discus throw Tuesday, giving Germany its sixth gold at the London Olympics. British cyclist Chris Hoy made history earlier in the evening by becoming his country's most decorated Olympian.

Bolt retains 100m title

Jamaica's Usain Bolt won gold in the 100 meters Sunday evening. His 9.63-second time was an Olympic record. South African double amputee Oscar Pistorius also raced in the third night of athletics at the London Olympics.
