The conflict over Western Sahara has smoldered for more than 40 years. Morocco's offer of autonomy for the region is now on the negotiating table, but that's not enough for many of the Saharawis exiled in Algeria.

A fresh bid by the United Nations to resolve the Western Sahara dispute has taken former German President Horst Köhler to Algiers. The new UN envoy has already visited Morocco and refugee camps in southwest Algeria.
Former German president Horst Köhler will be appointed UN special envoy to Western Sahara. Talks between Morocco and Polisario Front have been stalled since 2012.
