December 1, 2010

As the country-city-flight empties rural areas in Africa, big city slums are growing to the bursting point. The protagonists in our radio drama bust the trend and decide to move back to their village.

Seeing no chances of earning a living in the country, many opt to try their luck in the next big city. But it is not that easy to gain a foothold in the over-crowded urban centres of the African continent. On their arrival a lot of migrants realize that it is not the Promised Land they had dreamt of, with a high living standard and jobs in abundance.

In our new Learning by Ear series Ben and his friends Baki and Zeina decide to strive against the stream. Appalled by the lack of prospects in the city, these three young university graduates plan to set up an agricultural cooperative in their home village.

Many challenges await them and will put their motivation to a tough test. Where will they get the financial means to get started? How will the villagers welcome their project? And what kind of crop is the best investment for the future and is at the same time profitable? Listen carefully to find out if Ben and his friends will succeed!

Learning by Ear is available in six languages: English, Kiswahili, French, Hausa, Portuguese and Amharic. It is supported by Germany’s Federal Foreign Office.
