Bashana Abeywardane entered journalism in 1992 through Lakdiva newspaper. Later in 1993, he joined Hiru weekly, a newspaper owned by journalists and funded by public donations. In 2001 he became its’ chief editor and later served as its consultant editor. His articles against the war provoked the regime and forced him into exile in November 2006. In Germany, he stayed as a guest writer at the Heinrich Boell Haus and later stayed under the "Writers in Exile" program, hosted by the German P.E.N. Currently he serves as the convener of the exiled journalists’ organization, Journalists for Democracy in Sri Lanka.
