The World Cup in Russia kicks off on Thursday night with the host nation taking on Saudi Arabia. A World Cup opener is cause for excitement for any football fan – even when the two teams taking part are far from tournament favorites.
The Saudi squad has landed safely in Rostov-on-Don after one of their plane's engines appeared to catch fire. The airline, Rossiya, has said it is investigating the incident.

Germany survived a late Saudi Arabia rally to win their final World Cup tune-up in Leverkusen. Timo Werner and Marco Reus strengthened their claims for a starting place in Russia, but the visitors threatened late on.
