After unusually mild weather in December, the start of 2016 has brought freezing temperatures to much of the continent. For fans of winter sports, conditions are finally right for taking to the slopes.
Europe is shivering amid icy temperatures from Poland to Turkey. Several deaths have been reported as a result of the freezing weather conditions.
The number of unaccompanied minors crossing the Mediterranean doubled, UNICEF said. The group has said it also fears for children facing freezing temperatures in European refugee camps.
Blizzards, icy roads and dangerously low temperatures over the past two days have claimed more than a dozen lives in parts of Europe. The harsh winter weather has also cut off towns and caused massive power outages.
Thousands of migrants in Greece and in the Balkans have been suffering in freezing temperatures and bad weather. Local authorities have failed to prepare emergency measures, Doctors Without Borders (MSF) said.
