Ugandans are preparing to vote for their next president. Among the candidates is the country’s current leader, Yoweri Musevini, who has been in power for almost 30 years. Young people especially are hoping for change.
After some initial delays, Uganda's closest presidential elections in years got underway. Yoweri Museveni is bidding for a fifth term as Ugandan president but faces seven challengers.
Uganda has issued a ban on all political demonstrations ahead of President Museveni’s re-inauguration ceremony next week. The order also restricts the media from any live coverage of opposition activities.
Uganda's election commission has declared Yoweri Museveni the winner of the presidential elections. His opponent Kizza Besigye was reported to have won 35 percent of the votes.
In Uganda, the house arrest of opposition leader Kizza Bisegye continues to overshadow President Yoweri Museveni's election victory. Hundreds of other opposition figures have also been rounded up.
