Rain, flooding and the efforts of hundreds of ground staff to clear water off the course resulted in a three hour delay at the start of the second day of the British Open golf at St Andrews on the east coast of Scotland on Friday.

Dustin Johnson was on the first tee at the unusually late time of 5:48 p.m. local time. But he still managed to make three birdies in four holes on the front nine and went out to 33 to reclaim the lead of the championship at 10-under.

Former champion Tom Watson played his final round at the Open as darkness fell on the Old Course. Hundreds of people gathered around the final hole as Watson made his way to the green just before 10pm local time. He missed the cut for the last rounds.

Johnson held the lead during the day despite difficult conditions but only managed to reach the 14th tee before play was suspended for the night. He will have to complete his round early on Saturday.

England's Danny Willett is on 9-under after finishing his second round earlier in the day. Scotland's Paul Lawrie and New Zealand's Jason Day were both on 8-under when play was suspended and both need to complete their rounds on Saturday.

Strong winds are forecast for Saturday morning.
