Volkswagen is to produce luxury Bentley cars in its factory in the eastern German city of Dresden, using spare capacity at the plant, VW boss Bernd Pischetsrieder said on Tuesday. VW, Europe's biggest carmaker, is already producing its top-of-the-range Phaeton car at the Dresden plant and will begin making the Bentley Continental there from the middle of next year, Pischetsrieder told the Dresdner Neueste Nachrichten newspaper. Sales of the Phaeton have failed to take off, with just 6,000 sold last year, and the ultra-modern Dresden factory is only running at a quarter of its capacity. In contrast, Bentley's factory in Crewe, northern England, is running at full capacity. (AFP)
