VW’s fortunes are impacting Salzgitter. If the carmaker switches to e-mobility, jobs in gas-engine production at its plant there may be at risk. VW’s losses mean it pays much less tax, causing havoc in the city’s budget.
Volkswagen HQ in Wolfsburg isn’t the only place where the consequences of the dieselgate scandal are being felt. Cities that host VW’s production facilities must also rejig their budgets as VW pays fewer taxes.
Coalition talks may be stalling, but the new German parliament is still getting on with its day-to-day business. Cities and states are also pressing on with their work — but make it clear they want a coalition soon.
