Germany's car industry leader, Volkswagen, on Friday released figures confirming its preeminent status in Germany and western Europe. Although the number of newly registered cars dropped for the month of October by 2.2 percent compared to the same period last year, Volkswagen still managed to maintain its leading position. Although its market share dropped from 18.9 percent to 18.4 percent, Volkswagen's main competitor, the PSA group home to Peugeot and Citroen, lagged behind on 15.1 percent. In the first 10 months of 2002, VW sold 2,269 cars, compared to 2,414 over the same period last year.
