A ceasefire agreed in Minsk in February for eastern Ukraine keeps being breached. Neither side says it’s responsible. Locals caught in the crossfire just want to get on with their lives.
Ukraine's president and Chancellor Angela Merkel welcomed the decision to recommit to a ceasefire in eastern Ukraine first agreed in 2015. But the US is reported to be sending lethal weapons to Kyiv.
Ukraine's military says nine soldiers have died in clashes with Russia-backed rebels in the east of the country. The violence follows a separatist announcement of a plan to form a new state called Little Russia.
The swap comes after a recommitment to a ceasefire in eastern Ukraine, where over 10,000 people have been killed. A US decision to provide Ukraine with weapons has seen Russia warn the US is encouraging "new bloodshed."
German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier has said that a ceasefire ahead of the holiday period should be respected "for the sake of the civilian population."
