The worst outbreak of violence in over a decade erupted on the Israeli-Lebanon border in July. Following the seizure of two Israeli soldiers and a cross-border raid by guerrilla group Hezbollah, Israel launched a fierce offensive against its northern neighbor.

Large parts of southern Beirut, home to Hezbollah headquarters, were flattened as Israel targeted key infrastructure in air and ground raids. Hezbollah retaliated with rocket attacks on northern Israel. Civilians bore the brunt of the attacks. The international community scrambled to mediate in the conflict and bring an end to the violence.
