Authorities in Egypt say dozens of people have been killed in clashes between security forces and demonstrators.
An Egyptian court has sentenced 28 people to death for their involvement in the murder of the country's chief prosecutor in 2015. Hisham Barakat was killed in a car bomb after jihadists called for attacks on judiciary.
Riot police and armored vehicles stifled planned anti-austerity protests in Cairo and around Egypt on Friday. President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi warned that the economic reforms will not be scaled back.
Authorities have confirmed the arrest of prominent human rights attorney Ibrahim Metwally for spreading fake news. Metwally was helping the family of Giulio Regeni, an Italian student who was abducted and killed in 2016.
In addition to killing alleged IS members, Egypt police also killed two men suspected of belonging to the new Hasam terror group. Cairo has been struggling against multiple insurgencies that target state officials.
