Venezuela is now under fire from its creditors. The Russian Finance Minister has told reporters that Venezuela is having trouble paying its multi-billion dollar debt to Moscow. It's the latest sign of the chronic instability plaguing the nation.
Venezuela has arrested a former minister and ex-chief of the state oil company on corruption and sabotage charges. But opposition lawmakers have warned the arrests form part of the president's plans to consolidate power.
Venezuela's opposition has said it won't be bullied out of participating in future elections, a day after threats by President Nicolas Maduro. The US said it stands with Venezuelans as they "seek to restore democracy."
The two cousins were sentenced to 18 years in prison for trying to import cocaine into the US. Prosecutors argued they wanted to use drug funds to help their family's political campaigns.
Venezuelan voters are returning to polling booths, this time to select mayors in all of the South American state’s 335 municipalities. It is the last national election ahead of next year's presidential race.
