Vegetarian trout - altering diets in predator fish

Overfishing is a serious problem in the world's oceans, and aquaculture is one promising way to continue to supply people with the healthy protein that fish provide.

The problem with raising trout, however, is that the freshwater fish are predators. Feeding them therefore involves creating fish-meal from other fish caught in the oceans -- which doesn't help the marine environment to recover. That's why scientists in Germany are now trying to discover if this swimming carnivore can also thrive on a vegetarian diet.
