World Cup holders Germany will play South American champions Chile in the group stage of next year's Confederations Cup. Saturday’s draw also pitted European champions Portugal against hosts Russia.
The United States (along with Mexico and Canada) has applied to host the 2026 World Cup. Soccer officials say it would bring the US and Mexico closer together. However, there is already resistance to the idea in Mexico.
The expanded World Cup means an expanded bid from North America. The only previous successful joint bid came from South Korea and Japan, which together hosted the tournament in 2002.
