The US has rejected a proposal from China to freeze joint US-South Korean military exercises if North Korea suspends its nuclear and missile activities. However, the US also affirmed it is open to efforts to reduce tensions on the Korean peninsula.
After a nine-year hiatus, the US has redesignated North Korea as a state sponsor of terrorism. The move comes amid ongoing unease over Kim Jong Un's nuclear ambitions.
The US president arrived in China after publicly calling on it to crack down on North Korea. His two-night stay will also have a strong focus on trade.
China and the US can solve problems of "great danger and security," Donald Trump has said. The two countries pledged closer cooperation on drug trafficking, North Korea, trade and world peace.
