The out-of-court settlement, for an undisclosed sum of money, also called for all firearms to be removed from Kaarma's house, said David Paoli, the lawyer for the student's family.
"Whether it's symbolic or concrete, it was very important to dispossess these people of these guns… We just need to secure them and then the family will make decisions on what happens," Paoli told journalists.
Diren, who was living with a guest family in Missoula, Montana, was shot and killed by Kaarma (photo above, center) in Kaarma's garage in April 2014.
In February, Kaarma was sentenced to 70 years in prison for the shooting death.
Kaarma admitted to killing the teenager, but said he acted in self defense. His acquaintances said Kaarma had set a trap to catch burglars in his garage.
"You didn't protect your residence, you went hunting… You wanted to kill a kid for stealing canned beer," Judge Ed McLean told Kaarma during his sentencing hearing in February.
Diren's parents, Celal and Gulcin Dede (pictured above), filed a civilian lawsuit for "wrongful killing" and negligence, demanding that Kaarma pay for their son's future's lost wages. The suit was dropped after the settlement.
