Unification - The Last East German Government
East Germany’s only democratically legitimate government, led by Lothar de Maizière, served for less than two hundred days – from 18 March to 2 October 1990. It was a time of intense dynamics, massive time pressure and constantly changing conditions. The foundations of German Unification were laid in those six months, as the cabinet achieved its single goal: rendering itself redundant. With its accession to the Federal Republic of Germany, the East German state ceased to be after less than forty years in existence.
