Unforgettable Images - A History of German Film

This 4-part documentary series deals with our love of cinema. It’s a journey of discovery through 100 years of German motion picture history. It reveals that which at first appears far away can in reality be so close.

“Unforgettable Images” sets out to rediscover great moments from German cinema and, by selecting and arranging scenes from a century of film, help us see the classics in a new light.

The German films of today were only made possible by all the movies that went before.

German film personalities Caroline Link, Doris Dörrie, Michael Ballhaus, Tom Tykwer, Wim Wenders, Dominik Graf, Christian Petzold, Andreas Dresen, Wolfgang Kohlhaase and Hanns Zischler tell us what films played key roles in their lives and shaped their love and vision of cinema. Tom Tykwer remembers how Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau‘s “Nosferatu, a Symphony of Horror” (1922) taught him the true meaning of fear. Michael Ballhaus discusses his collaboration with Rainer Werner Fassbinder on “The Marriage of Maria Braun” (1978), and Caroline Link speaks of her admiration for Edgar Reitz and the way he tells the big and little stories of his first “Heimat” (1984) series with such patience and love.

“Unforgettable Images” is a subjective approach to film history. It’s not so much the history of German Film as a story of German film. But what exactly is German about German movies? Reporters Michael Althen and Hans Helmut Prinzler have a go at answering that question, among others, in their homage to the German cinema.
