The Security Council has given cautious backing to a ceasefire in Syria brokered by Russia and Turkey. Russia had to tone down an initial appeal for the UN's full endorsement, but did manage to win support for its efforts in the war-torn country.
Russia has blocked a US-drafted resolution to renew a mandate of the body investigating the use of chemical weapons in Syria. A rival, Russian-made motion was also blocked, leaving the future of the probe in question.
