UN Pulls Out as Violence Escalates in Sri Lanka

10/09/08September 10, 2008

Sri Lankan jets attacked a Tamil Tiger rebel intelligence headquarters in the north on Wednesday. The defence ministry said in a statement that the raid had taken place in the northern region of Kilinochchi. The raid came one day after rebels launched a surprise attack on a military base, killing at least 25 people. Meanwhile, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon expressed his concern for the tens of thousands of civilians caught in the ongoing battle between the government troops and Tamil Tiger rebels.
