A UN group has declared that Wikileaks founder Julian Assange is being "arbitrarily detained" and should be allowed to go free. Assange has been holed up in Ecuador's London embassy since 2012.
Ecuador has granted citizenship to Julian Assange, who has been holed up inside the Ecuadorian embassy in London for over five years. Quito has said naturalization should provide Assange with another layer of protection.
The Ecuadorian foreign minister has urged "international cooperation" to end a standoff in the case of Julian Assange. But the UK has warned it will arrest the WikiLeaks founder if he steps outside Ecuador's embassy.
A British judge has upheld an arrest warrant for Julian Assange. The Wikileaks founder has been holed up in the Ecuadorian Embassy in the UK since 2012 to avoid extradition to Sweden over sexual assault charges.
Ecuador has said the decision was made after Assange violated a deal on not interfering in other countries' affairs. Assange had questioned UK's accusation that Russia was behind the poisoning of a former Russian spy.
