UN inspectors have arrived in Damascus to investigate the alleged use of chemical weapons in the country's civil war.
The chemical weapons watchdog OPCW said sarin was used in an attack on a northern Syrian town five days before the banned nerve agent killed dozens in Khan Sheikhoun, prompting global outrage.
Russia inherited a massive chemical weapons stockpile from the Soviet Union at the end of the Cold War. Its decision to put an end to that deadly legacy has been met with praise.
Russia has accused the US of "barbaric" bombardment of Raqqa, after US-backed forces took control of the city earlier this week. Forces on both sides are racing to reclaim land in Syria's oil-rich Deir el-Zour province.
The Syrian government has said Israel targeted a military facility in Masyaf, killing at least two people. The target is believed to have been a Syrian government agency branch responsible for producing chemical weapons.
