UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is in Israel for talks with leaders from both sides. Three weeks of violence have fueled fears of a third intifada. On Tuesday Israeli troops shot dead a Palestinian who rammed his car into a group of pedestrians.
Just seven months after being released from jail the leader of an outlawed Islamic movement has been arrested again. It was unclear if the arrest was linked to recent violence surrounding the Temple Mount holy site.
The US, Russia, EU and United Nations have expressed concern about escalating violence in Jerusalem. The UN Security Council is to hold closed-door talks and called on all sides to "demonstrate maximum restraint."
Tensions in the West Bank have flared enormously with deaths on both sides of the conflict. Israel has now appeared to offer some concessions over contentious security precautions that led to bloody violence.
Human rights groups have denounced attempts by the Israeli government to shutter Al-Jazeera's operations in the country. Israeli officials have accused the Qatari-owned broadcaster of "supporting terrorism."
