The incident took place in Västeras, just over 100 kilometers to the west of Stockholm, a police statement read.

At around 1 p.m. local time (1100 UTC), a male was said to have attacked at least three people, killing a man and a woman and seriously injuring another man.

"[The injured victim] was brought in with life-threatening injuries," Lena Moren, head duty nurse at Västeras hospital, told the Swedish public broadcaster SVT.

An IKEA spokesperson said the Erikslund center had been closed immediately after the incident and all shoppers were asked to leave the premises.

SVT showed pictures of hundreds of shoppers outside the cordoned off store looking on as one victim was being loaded into an ambulance.

Police declined to comment whether there was any information about a motive for the attack.
