Turkish soccer fans watching the Germany vs. Turkey match in Berlin Kreuzberg - je 26.06.2008 10

Michael BärJune 26, 2008

After the match Turkey's coach said his men would be departing as the most colorful squad of the tournament -- a description few Germans would dispute. The Turks' fighting spirit made last night's match a nail biter. But the tension did not spill over into the inter ethnic violence some had feared. Germany is home to some 2.7 million people of Turkish origin, more than any other country in Western Europe. Here in Berlin's heavily Turkish Kreuzberg district, there were a few scuffles between Turks and Germany-supporting Kurds, but police moved in and the groups quickly dispersed -- and elsewhere in the area, the prevailing mood was that of a giant street party.
