Turkey has become the target of terrorist attacks. The number of attacks has risen during the last year. Has the Turkish state tolerated the presence of Islamists for too long?

Geographically, Turkey straddles Asia and Europe and influences from both East and West are clearly reflected in the culture. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s leadership has changed all that. Turkey has become a country where freedom of speech has been radically restricted, and opposition politicians, businessmen and scholars are often imprisoned. The majority of Turks are Muslim and most of those are Sunnis. Current state policies are proving beneficial to extremist organizations such as the so-called Islamic State. Turkey appears to have become a central hub for jihadists in Syria and Iraq; here they find men and munitions. But the Islamic state has now declared war on Turkey and is carrying out more and more suicide attacks, particularly in tourist centers.
