The opening of the Gotthard rail tunnel is bringing Switzerland together. Locals in Ticino canton are hoping the new connection will bring more tourists to the area.
President Doris Leuthard has inaugurated the Stoos funicular railway line, the steepest in the world. Leuthard, who was part of the group that took the maiden Stoosbahn voyage, described the ride as a "thrill."
Switzerland has a new masterpiece of engineering: On June 1, it inaugurates the world's longest rail tunnel. The Gotthard Base Tunnel brings northern and southern Europe even closer together.
After 17 years and 11 billion euros, the first Gotthard Base Tunnel passenger train departed Zurich on Sunday morning. The express train will save passengers 30 minutes on the trip.
The railway in Switzerland starts running scheduled passenger and freight service through the new Gotthard Base Tunnel on Sunday, December 11. It will make travel through the Swiss Alps faster.
