Three festival suggestions

Heavy metal fans will be rocking at the Wacken Festival in northern Germany. Fans of Wagner will be heading to the Bayreuth Festival in Bavaria. But there is a lot more to choose from: Open air events of all kinds will be taking place all over Germany.
Here are three highlights:
Nibelungen Festival in Worms
This year’s event starts on July 31. It continues until August 16 and features 16 performances of Gemetzel by Albert Ostermaier. The title translates as carnage and it is the tale of the hero Siegfried. It includes adventures, intrigues and betrayal seen through the eyes of a child.
It is staged against the impressive backdrop of the 900-year-old Worms Cathedral.
The festival will also include readings, poetry slams, lectures and workshops. Tickets cost between 29 and 129 Euros ($32-$143).
Lake Machsee party near Hanover
This is one of the largest open air parties in northern Germany. Visitors will be welcomed by over 100 bands, DJs and artists and there is a special program for the kids. They can also enjoy gastronomic delights from the Caribbean, Mexico and Japan. Lake Machsee offers visitors the opportunity to see the party from the water. There will also be boat races and swimming events. The open air party attracts over 2 million visitors.
The Bard's Festival: World music in Bavaria
The Bardentreffen, or Bard's Festival, takes place for the 40th time this year in Nuremberg. Over the years this has become a world music extravaganza with songwriters, traditional music from all over the world and experimental bands. It attracts some 200,000 visitors to the city's historic center. This year's event with a Mediterranean flair will feature 90 concerts on nine different stages und runs until August 2.
