The Speicherstadt is the largest warehouse district in the world and since 2015 a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The red brick neo-gothic buildings are very much a landmark of Hamburg.
June 4 is Germany's World Heritage Day. Here are some of the country's sites listed by UNESCO, and more on the process that led them to be selected among the prestigious World Heritage Sites.
No less than 41 sites - architectural and natural marvels - in Germany have been placed on UNESCO’s World Heritage list. Each is unique and authentic as well as popular with tourists.
Steamships used to dock at the St. Pauli Piers, the Landungsbrücken in Hamburg. Now tours start here: to the historical Speicherstadt, or warehouse district, the modern HafenCity and the traditional fish market.
