The second round of the presidential election in Serbia - Journal (deutsch) 21.01.2008 16:00 UTC

Simon PuehlerJanuary 21, 2008

The second round of the presidential election in Serbia will be a run-off between a pro-Russian candidate and the country's pro-European incumbent. Against the background of tensions over the future of Kosovo, Serbs voted in a first round on Sunday, giving a slightly larger share to the natonalist leader of the Radical Party, Tomislav Nicolic. President Boris Tadic campaigned for strong ties to the EU despite its pledge to back independence for Kosovo -- a move many Serbs strongly oppose. Reacting to those election results, the EU said this morning it remained confident that ties with Serbia would continue to deepen.
