The male peacock puts on quite a show with his colorful tail, using the beauty and symmetry of his feathers to signal health, fertility and strength. It is one of nature’s many elaborate strategies. Darwin called the phenomenon sexual selection. This genetic programming appears to have remained active to this day.
New research has shown that human partner selection – despite lower birth rates and emancipation – is still guided by our evolutionary heritage. Driven by primordial instincts, the human being is constantly on the look-out for the most attractive partner with the best possible genetic make-up. It is a universal pattern that takes its course every time two people flirt. Our senses need just split seconds to decide whether the person opposite is a potential partner.
