The Luther Matrix

February 28, 2017

Martin Luther changed the world - by listening to his conscience. That's the conventional wisdom. Is Luther really a role model for moral integrity? Can the Reformation serve as a blueprint for successful social change?

The Luther Matrix is a documentary thriller that blends history with contemporary politics.

A heady cocktail of Martin Luther, a whistleblower, the Chancellery and the secret services, this fictitious story begins in the present day. A top-level team with the state security services is investigating a system administrator, who copied and made public documents and data and is threatening further revelations. The whistleblower is arrested, but refuses to speak during questioning. His only response is to quote Martin Luther: 'Here I stand, I can do no other.' Eventually, the investigators - played by actors - come to understand that the whistleblower’s actions were inspired by his understanding of Martin Luther and the Reformation. They embark on an intensive and exhausting exploration of Luther’s legacy. It takes them to the places where he lived and worked, as they talk to science and theology experts to find out how relevant the theologian’s message is today.
