Syria peace talks are underway in Vienna. 17 states, the EU and the UN are together at one table. They include Iran and its biggest opponent in the region, Saudi Arabia. Syria itself is not represented. And there, the killing continues.
Russian President Putin said the Syrian military's successes have created conditions for "the start of a political process on a major scale." Syria's Assad said progress would be made in the Astana peace talks.

In a last-ditch push for peace in Syria, UN officials are hosting peace talks between the Damascus regime and the opposition. The Vienna talks are scheduled just days ahead of Russia's rival peace summit.
Berlin is upping its aid to Syria and refugees in the region, pledging to deliver an extra €1 billion. The UN has urged donor countries to contribute, warning that 13 million people are in need of emergency aid.
