Voters in Switzerland overwhelmingly rejected a proposal that would have provided everyone in the country a guaranteed basic income. The referendum was controversial from the start, with the government advising people to vote 'no.'
Voters in the alpine nation rejected a plan that would have increased taxes to fund state pension coffers. The retirement age for women would have also gone up, as the nation struggles to deal with an aging populace.
Despite threats and warnings from the international community, Iraqi Kurds turned out in large numbers to cast their votes in an independence referendum. Turkey's president Erdogan said the move could cause "ethnic war."
Voters in the Kurdish territories of northern Iraq have begun voting in an independence referendum. The ballot has created tensions domestically and internationally with the UN warning of a "destabilizing effect."
The Kurdish regional head has vowed never to return to "the failed partnership" with Baghdad, ahead of Monday's independence vote which Iran, Iraq and Turkey all oppose. Earlier, Iran halted flights to and from the area.
