Police in France have shot dead a gunman who killed three people before holing up in a supermarket with hostages. The attacker was known to police as a petty criminal, though the police did not realize that he had become radicalized.

Lieutenant Colonel Arnaud Beltrame had offered himself in place of a woman whom the attacker was using as a human shield. The attacker, Redouane Lakdim, had been on a list of terror suspects since 2014.
