German film schools enjoy an excellent international reputation, with their graduates frequently scooping student Oscars. DW profiles the 2017 winners, Johannes Preuss and Katja Benrath.
The Motion Picture Academy will honor Johannes Preuss and Katja Benrath amid a competitive international field of student directors. Preuss' documentary examined Ghana's gold trade while Benrath's focused on terrorism.
Filmmaker Johannes Preuss has received a student Oscar for his film, "Galamsey," which was shot in Ghana and looks at the illegal gold trade there. DW met him to discuss how the country could "turn into a hell."
The Student Academy Awards have praised two German directors and their movies about a terrorist attack in Kenya and illegal gold mining in Ghana. The prize has recognized talents such as Robert Zemeckis in the past.
