US senator John McCain spoke in strong terms at the Munich Security Conference about what he maintains are Russian president Vladimir Putin’s true intentions in the Syrian civil war. Hopes are fading that the conflict can be resolved.

The two leaders discussed Syria, the conflict in Ukraine, the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline and the Iran nuclear deal. Merkel was critical on press and cultural freedom as well as a ceasefire breach in Ukraine.
