Tornadoes have caused mayhem in the United States, with forecasters saying the weather is unusual for January. The town of Adairsville in Georgia took the brunt of the storm, which has killed at least two people.
After Super Typhoon Meranti wreaked havoc in parts of China and Taiwan and killed at least 15 people, strong winds and heavy rains from a second storm have pounded Taiwan and islands in the southern Japanese archipelago.
In October, Earth observation satellite Jason-3 will officially take over duties from its predecessor. Weather services and researchers worldwide will then be able to determine the sea level much more precisely.
Florida's governor has called a state of emergency in 51 counties, warning that Hermine, could be "life-threatening." Thousands of people in coastal areas were told to leave their homes before the storm made landfall.
One person was killed, buildings were destroyed, and hundreds of thousands of homes were left without power. Hermine has weakened into a tropical storm as it heads up the East Coast of the United States.
