Tornadoes have caused mayhem in the United States, with forecasters saying the weather is unusual for January. The town of Adairsville in Georgia took the brunt of the storm, which has killed at least two people.
Three people are reported to have died and thousands are without power as ex-hurricane Ophelia moves over Ireland. The storm was downgraded overnight, but authorities issued a red alert as it made landfall.
At least seven people died, five of them in their vehicles, and the public was warned to stay indoors as gale force winds and rain swept across northern Germany. Public transport was also severely disrupted.
US authorities expect Hurricane Nate to slam into the Gulf Coast as it heads for New Orleans. Nate claimed at least 25 lives as a tropical storm in Central America before charting a path towards the US.
