Sri Lankan Cricket Team Attacked in Pakistan
March 3, 2009The attack came as the team’s bus was heading towards the Gaddafi stadium under police escort. Six police officers and two civilians were killed. At least six of the cricketers and their coach sustained minor injuries.
The Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani strongly condemned the attack and conveyed their apologies to the Sri Lankan people and their government for the harm caused to the cricket players.
The Sri Lankan team was in Pakistan as part of a scheduled tour. It had been the only international team willing to tour Pakistan amid rising security concerns.
Meanwhile, the Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa cut short a three-day official visit to Nepal because of the incident which he said was a "cowardly terrorist attack".
