Supporters of disgraced former President Park Geun-hye have rallied outside a Seoul court as her corruption trial got underway. Park, who was impeached in December, is also charged with extortion and abuse of power.
After nine hours of questioning, a Seoul court has jailed Park Geun-hye over fears she could destroy corruption evidence. Park faces 20 days of imprisonment while police investigate corruption allegations.
The Constitutional Court in Seoul has upheld the decision to remove President Park Geun-hye from office following a corruption scandal. A new election will have to be held within 60 days.
South Koreans have taken to the streets to call for President Park to resign over her role in a corruption scandal. A secretive confidante was recently arrested for abuse of power.
