Worth more than their weight in gold, the illegal trade in rhino horns has developed into a billion-dollar industry. In South Africa, attempts to crack down on poaching have had mixed results.
A private breeder is auctioning off stockpiles of rhino horn after a court ruled that selling the horn within South Africa was legal. Conservation groups are appalled.
A French zoo and police say intruders have shot dead a white rhino and sawed off its horns. The break-in at the Thoiry wildlife park near Paris is suspected as poaching. Rhino horns fetch thousands on the black market.
Twelve of a group of 100 white rhinos have left South Africa on a plane to Botswana to protect them from poachers. A spokesman for the Rhinos Without Borders group said the animals coped well with their 15-hour trip.
Friday is the last day on which South Africans can register their approval, or disapproval, of a draft law permitting trade in rhinoceros horn. Private rhino owners welcome the bill, conservationists are worried.
