German electronics giant Siemens has won a contract to rebuild the infrastructure for a GSM mobile phone network in northern Iraq, according to the Associated Press. Siemens spokesman Peter Gottal told the news agency on Thursday that the firm signed a contract with the network operator, Wataniya Telecom from Kuwait, before Christmas. Gottal said Siemens was “also under consideration as contractor for two power plants” with the U.S. engineering company Bechtel. He said the company’s American subsidiary Siemens-Westinghouse may supply steam turbines for the Daura 5/6 power plant near Baghdad and it was competing to build a conventional power station in the northern city of Kirkuk.
