Short-lived History: Alfa Romeo Alfasud

In 1971, Alfa Romeo introduced a compact car with front-wheel drive. Except for a hatchback, it had all the ingredients which would, three years later, make the first VW Golf such a success. But rust was the Alfasud's Achilles' heel.

By the time the first vehicle inspections rolled around, some parts had completely rusted through. That was a shame, because otherwise the Alfasud was a well-engineered car. And it had nearly all the ingredients that would, three years later, make the first Volkswagen Golf such a success.
