Nigerien President Mahamadou Issoufou has been inaugurated for a second five-year term after polls boycotted by the opposition. Despite the country's uranium and oil wealth, three-quarters of Nigeriens live in poverty.
President Issoufou's first term has not impressed most Nigeriens. They are unhappy with the continued presence of foreign military bases in the country and his failure to fulfill his promises.
Berlin's plan to abolish child marriages has been spurred by the influx of refugees into Europe. While the move will benefit victims of the practice, the reasons why children are married early lie elsewhere.
