The cornerstone for a new Globe Theater was laid in Berlin on Friday, William Shakespeare's 440th birthday. The "Globe Berlin," which is meant to be an open-air arena, harks back to the theater in London that staged Shakespeare's plays during his lifetime. The Berlin Shakespeare Company is set to premier "The Tempest" on the site of the unfinished theater on the banks of the Spree River in Berlin's Friedrichshain district on June 2. The Globe Berlin was privately initiated and still needs to collect some of the €7 million ($8.3 million) needed to complete the building, which will have a retractable roof so actors can perform beneath the stars.
